What If Movie Review

What If is a movie about Wallace, an english dude living in Toronto. Wallace had his heart broken by his ex-girlfriend, who cheated on him, and is convinced that any relationship that starts by cheating is doomed to end badly. After months of seclusion, Wallace finally decides to get back out into the world and goes to a house party. There he meets Chantry, a girl he has a-lot in common with.

He grows interested in her, but when he finds out she has a serious boyfriend, decides not to pursue the matters further. Until they meet again and Chantry makes a convincing case of becoming friends, even though she has a boyfriend. And so they become friends, even though Wallace secretly likes her, and soon enough, Chantry starts to develop feelings for Wallace as well.

What I liked most about this movie was the dialogue. It’s witty and quick. Even though the movie isn’t overtly funny, it did get some chuckles out of me here and there. Also, I thought the plot would be pretty predictable, but it wasn’t. There were surprises along the way and I always appreciate when an age-old theme such as friends liking each other even when one of them is a relationship takes a fresh turn.

The supporting characters were also very likable. One of the best lines in the movie comes from Wallace’s best friend, who says: “It’s complicated. All this love shit is.” Which sort of sums up the movie. If you like films with an indie feel and quick-witted dialogue and a little bit of romance but not too much, you’ll like this movie as well.
